Change Leadership

Women in Sport Aotearoa believes that positive change will only come with increased representation of women and girls in leadership positions.

In its Strategic Plan, Women in Sport Aotearoa has pledged to:

  • Connect and empower a wide network of engaged champions
  • Influence the gender policies and strategies of sector organisations
  • Support women and girls across diverse communities to safely engage in sport and recreation
  • Advocate for more investment in sport and recreation for women and girls and the increased development of female leaders
  • Champion and support current and future female leaders across the sport and recreation sector
  • Advocate development of gender equity in the coaching community

In early 2018, Minister for Sport & Recreation, the Hon Grant Robertson, announced that he was making ‘outcomes for women and girls in sport’ his number one priority within the portfolio. He set Sport New Zealand a mandate and invited several organisations, including Women in Sport Aotearoa, to actively contribute.

Over the course of several months, the Board and extended Women in Sport Aotearoa family, including members of the IWG Advisory Group in New Zealand, consulted into development of the strategy. The first-hand experience of our senior leaders across a multitude of global, national and grassroots level sports organisations, spanning governance and leadership to coaching, media and broadcast, commercial and sponsorship, was highly welcomed by the Minister.

At the launch of the government ‘Women and Girls in Sport & Active Recreation’ strategy in October 2018, Minister Robertson said:

“Our government is committed to championing equality for women and girls in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

He went on to say that we must:

“Pick up the momentum of a global movement toward empowering women and girls through being active, recognising its value as a means to improve wellbeing and equity. Now is the time to provide strategic direction so as a country we can capitalise on that value and progress further, ensuring that the inequity and barriers facing women and girls today will be a thing of the past.”

The New Zealand Government has committed $10 million over three years to supporting the roll out of the new strategy.

Women in Sport Aotearoa is committed to assisting in its deployment wherever it can.

It is our ambition to see New Zealand become best practice by the time the 8th IWG World Conference takes place in Auckland in May 2022.
