Meet the Hon Grant Robertson

The Hon Grant Robertson, Minister for Sport & Recreation and Minister of Finance, New Zealand Government

Minister Robertson is an avid sports fan and champion for ‘women in sport’. At the beginning of his tenure as Minister for Sport & Recreation, he immediately stated that positive change for women and girls in sport and active recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand was his number one priority. Since then he has driven and supported change across the sector, launching the ‘Women & Girls in Sport & Active Recreation’ strategy, which includes a $10million investment over 3 years, and holding the system accountable. Minister Robertson studied politics at Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 1995. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1997 where he managed the New Zealand Overseas Aid Programme to Samoa. He was then posted to the United Nations in New York, working on global environment and development issues. On his return to New Zealand, he became an advisor to former Prime Minister Helen Clark. Following this, he took a business development role with the University of Otago, working with researchers, investors and businesses to develop and commercialise the university’s world-leading research. His belief in social justice and a desire to see every New Zealander achieve their potential led him to politics, and he has been the Member of Parliament for Wellington Central since November 2008 and has held his ministerial portfolio since the 2017 election.
