On 29 March 2019, Women in Sport Aotearoa was delighted to announce a brand new event – the Captains Lunch.

The event, which marked 25 years since the establishment of the International Working Group (IWG) on Women & Sport, was “captained” (hosted) by an array of high profile athletes, coaches and sports leaders including Commonwealth Games gold medallist Beatrice Faumuina, Kiwi Fern Co-Captain Honey Hireme, Paralympic silver medallist Holly Robinson, plus the Chief Executive Officers of Sport New Zealand, High Performance Sport New Zealand, the New Zealand Olympic Committee and Paralympics New Zealand

Before lunch, attendees enjoyed a keynote speech by Hon. Grant Robertson, Minister for Sport and Recreation followed by a panel discussion on diverse leadership driving high performance featuring the The Rt Hon. Helen Clark ONZ – newly announced as Patron of both IWG and Women in Sport Aotearoa – plus Dr. Farah Palmer, Board Director, Sport New Zealand / New Zealand Rugby; Scott Bartlett, Chief Executive Officer, Kordia; with moderation by Melodie Robinson, former Black Fern and General Manager Sport and Events, TVNZ.

Helen Clark said: “Women and girls continue to be underrepresented across all facets of business and sport. Now, more than ever, our nation Aotearoa New Zealand must work together to include everyone, no matter their gender, ethnicity, faith or beliefs, sexual orientation, or physical abilities. Our leaders must support the drive toward greater diversity and inclusiveness.”

This event was hosted in partnership with the Trans-Tasman Business Circle. Funds raised will assist New Zealand’s delivery of the IWG Secretariat & Conference 2018-2022 and contribute to facilitating local programmes focussed on ensuring that women and girls gain equity of opportunity to participate, compete and build careers in sport and recreation.
