Highly skilled events expert joins to lead overall programme delivery.

Women in Sport Aotearoa (WISPA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicky van den Bos (nee Johnston) to the senior full-time position of Programme Director.

Nicky has joined after nearly three years with New Zealand Cricket, most recently as the Head of Events. In this role, she led a team delivering more than 20 international matches around Aotearoa New Zealand each season. Her responsibilities included leading multiple workstreams across 10 different venues, including management of broadcast integration and production teams, planning of travel and event logistics, budgeting, strategic event planning and execution, along with team and staff management.

In her new role as Programme Director, Nicky will be in charge of leading all global and local programmes, notably the Sport NZ Women + Girls Summit events in 2020 and 2021 and 8th IWG World Conference on Women & Sport, 5 -8 May 2022. The latter is one of the “big four” women’s sports events coming to Aotearoa between 2021 – 2023, with the women’s World Cups in Rugby, Cricket and Football also being hosted. It is the largest global gathering of experts on gender equity in sport and physical activity, with 2,000+ expected across the physical-digital hybrid programme.

Nicky will lead the design of each programme, including theme and content planning, structure and format, budgets and overall global and local implementation, including best in class digital delivery. Her work will directly feed into delivery of both the Women in Sport Aotearoa and IWG strategic plans, and she will be responsible for global partnerships with the likes of the International Olympic Committee. She will have a material role in supporting delivery of results against a number of Sport NZ’s commitments to the government ‘Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation’ strategy.

Rachel Froggatt, Chief Executive of Women in Sport Aotearoa, said:

“We are about to launch the global campaign for the 8th IWG World Conference on Women & Sport. Whilst we are very excited about what we have planned and the impact it will have for women and girls, we have no illusion as to the complexity of the logistical task ahead, especially given COVID-19.

Here at home, we are on the run up to the annual Sport NZ Women and Girls Summit in October. This has also had to be adjusted to suit our continually evolving landscape and to take into account the disproportionate affect COVID-19 is having on sport and physical activity for women and girls.

We are thrilled to have a director of Nicky’s calibre and experience join us at this critical time.”

Nicky van den Bos, Programme Director, said:

“I am so very excited to join the Women in Sport Aotearoa team in the preparation and build up towards both national and internationally significant events on the global stage. What an amazing opportunity it is for me to put my events and operations skills to the test working with some incredible people around the world.”

Until recently, Nicky was known professionally under her previous name: Nicky Johnston.
